| Facing WEST Finally I, humbly and with awe, Address the United States of America, directly the Secretary of Education, and what is the education/industrial/complex. You know this flag? How would those harried giants who first marched under it see America today? Is it right that 25% of High School graduates do so functionally illiterate? Is it right that 50% graduate physically unfit? And why do so many children right at the beginning of the great adventure and journey we call LIFE suffer from adult-onset diabetes? This cannot be right; now can it? This is education's manifest failure. Another - money: when will enough, ever be enough? This teacher dares to say educating children needs not more money, but less - and a strategy. Do you believe me? Well, your most feared agency - I speak of Immigration - think so, by issuing its only extraordinary visa ever, in education reform. [ TOUCH BOOK 'Hope is Democracy.'] No country in the world can change direction so adroitly as America. Can education? If NOT, and current trends continue, then what? More gated communities on the one hand, and on the other? 'RoboCopland.' Education's failure has in principle created an underclass of 40 millions; they are excluded from the American Dream. If you cannot lean to their dreams - and in their way, and in their time - then they will, surely, lean to your worst nightmares. The USA is, in part, a toxic culture, where Freedom has become license and abundance has become gluttony - and from "Sea to shining Sea." Are US schools dealing with this in any real way at all - this the Emperor with Few Clothes?? Can there be any alternative? You know young Americans - All - have the greatest dreams in the world and Democracy Reaches the Kids! [SHOW] will harness their dreams. And where America leads, then the world will follow; for America is the hope of the world. And the Century will indeed be illuminated by the smiles of multitudes of children, and the century will be - worthily - the 'American century.' Democracy's education is in the continuing spirit of the most important of all revolutions, the American Revolution. Have you the vision of those who first served under this banner? POINT Madison/Adams' Hamilton would have seized on it. Can you Mr. Secretary seize the moment? That is the historic challenge before you now.
