| I hold a unique privilege: the crossing of All Americas on foot, over several years, and without money. For the first time - ever - the most southerly community in the world [Ushuaia, Tierra de Fuego] at the bottom of South America was linked to the most northerly [Barrow, Alaska] on the Arctic Ocean. A host of (world's) records were garnered. ( George Meegan - Official World's Record ) It was the last, the final pioneered continental crossing that can ever be made. What wonderful fortune! Travelling year after year, without money, sustained by a dream, and in remote parts led to me sharing with so many Peoples. And to the fore, it was the First Nations, who embraced a fragile English wayfarer and never asked "Why?" How to thank them? To these First Nations have fallen a fierce rearguard, a primal battle, against total cultural destruction. This I could see for sure, and at first hand, How to help? To this end I have worked. First was the noble and absolute Apology of the USA, through its agent, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and it was they, who on knees, spake of "Cowardly killing of Woman and Children ..." (How the US came to Apologize to "the Indians") The next stage must be - and at soonest - change the education system that was imposed upon First Nation children, that which acts as a cultural destruction engine. Currently education around the world is beset by many manifest ills, killing cultures is alas, but only one. Education is so very crucial. It is the precursor to a happy (or not) life. It can make a person, or it can break a person. I asked myself what's education for, anyway, the desired result. So, I took a deep look, and asked what exactly are those things necessary which can best equip each child for life in our 21st Century?? Surprisingly, it seems that this has not been researched in any real and and meaningful way. From this stemmed the US subsequently recognizing the work as fundermental and important. They declared, officially that is, that it was "extraordinary" and made it one of the 300 ideas which can change America. (The US extraordinary visa) Here, I have revisited this terrain. So let us now take a look and see what in fact the needs of our Societies are; for each young person at the beginning of that journey and adventure we call LIFE. What is it that a person really needs to become an educated person? I have redefined education and based on exactly this. Join me then, on my daily blogs, as we step together, side by side, toward that 'city on the hill.' Where all our children can be happy once again, their treasured childhood no more smote by modern educational practice. It's a wonderful journey. Important? Oh yer.
